Gilbert helps the Higley Unified School District in the Race Against Waste:
Race Against Waste: Recycle program teaches real-world skills
GILBERT, AZ - Gilbert has began providing recycling services to the Higley Unified School District this school year. As part of the service, in January the Town implemented a brand new program called Race Against Waste.
The recycling education program includes an educational presentation in the cafeteria, which culminates with a recycling educator from the town helping physically show the kids what to recycle, and to dump liquids (milk cartons are one of the biggest recycleables). At that point, each school has a Green Team, of students who act as recycling ambassadors by continuing to educate students about recycling as role models in the lunch room.
The goal is to educate and excite our Gilbert kids about recycling, said Susan Hargrove, a recycling specialist and educator.
"As the children are exiting the cafeteria, we physically are demonstrating for them on their tray, what is recyclable, and helping them pour out the liquids from their cartons," Susan said. "The kids themselves help us continue that education by taking on leadership roles as environmental stewards."
