Additional detail related to the earlier APD/Nixle message about this incident: Detectives are looking for more witnesses to the collision that happened last night at about 9:00 PM on westbound IH-40 near the Crockett Street exit.
Investigators believe that the collision was an intentional assault. The driver of a red 1999 Ford Escort traveling west on IH-40 ran into the right back quarter panel of a red Honda CRV that was also westbound. This caused the driver of the CRV to lose control, flip, and then slide into a guard rail, a sign, and a tree. The driver of the CRV remains in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The passenger was also injured. The driver of the red Escort was located nearby and arrested for aggravated assault when officers developed evidence that the collision was an assault rather than a traffic accident. It apparently stemmed from an argument before the incident on the parking lot of Sam’s Club at 2201 S. Ross.
Investigators believe that other people saw this incident. At least two witnesses tried to follow the suspect as he drove away from the scene. Some people that may have seen it stopped to help but left before officers were able to interview them. Investigators want to speak to anyone that saw the incident or what happened before the collision. If you have information, please call Det. Sgt.
