Incident Number: 11- 0018120
Information Contact: Donald Bartosh, Battalion Chief

Incident Type: Lost hikers / Helicopter rescue
Date/Time of Incident: March 31, 2011 / 1448 hours
Incident Location: Hills above Arroyo Verde Park

One hiker sustained minor leg scratch

Fire Equipment: 1 Ventura paramedic engine company, 1 AMR ambulance and 1 Ventura County helicopter (Air Squad 9)

Narrative: Ventura City Fire and AMR ambulance resources were initially dispatched to a report of three adult hikers lost in the hills between Arroyo Verde Park and the Two-trees area north of Ventura. One of the lost hikers had telephoned the Fire Communications Center via cell phone to report they had gotten separated from established hiking trails and had lost their orientation to Arroyo Verde Park, from where they had started.

The first responding units were able to speak to the lost hikers via cell phone to determine their general condition, if anyone was injured and a description of their surrounding area to aid in locating them. The first responders also requested the assistance of Ventura County’s rescue helicopter to speed the search.

Air squad 9 responded from Camarillo Airport to the Arroyo Verde Park area and within minutes was able to locate the three lost hikers, land and take the lost hikers onboard, and airlift them back to Arroyo Verde landing in an open, grassy area of the park. When the hikers were safely on the ground in the park, paramedics assessed them for injuries and treated their minor dehydration. No one required hospital treatment.
