An observant Benicia Police Officer thwarted a major metal theft from a Benicia business early Monday morning. Benicia Police Officer Kirk Keffer came across the three listed suspects as they were loading heavy metal pipes into the back of a rented U-haul truck at a closed business at 1:20 am. The business is located on the 400 block of West Channel Road in Benicia's Industrial Park (name not disclosed for security reasons).

"Many businesses and government locations in surrounding cities, including ours, have been victimized by the rise in metal and copper thefts," Benicia Police Lt. Mike Daley said. "This is outstanding work by a very alert officer. As with this case, metal thieves strike in isolated areas late at night when there are no potential witnesses or business owners or employees are not around. Our officers do a good job patrolling our Industrial Park, which is evident by this arrest."

Events unfolded early Monday morning when Officer Keffer, patrolling the Industrial Park, came across the U-haul van and three subjects parked in front of the closed business. As he approached the subjects, all three ran, eventually scaling a chain link fence at the business.

Officer Keffer was able to chase and locate the three subjects as additional Benicia police units arrived. Officers found the U-haul truck loaded with heavy metal piping with other pipes stacked next to the truck for loading. Officers determined that the subjects were not associated with the business. The business placed the amount of the metal pipes at approximately $11,500.

All three were booked into the Solano County Jail for felony grand theft and conspiracy.
