Rescues and Evacuation – Ventura River

Date/Time of Incident: 03/20/11 4:25 P.M.

Incident Location: Ventura River, between the Pacific Ocean and Crooked Palm Rd.

Cause: Storm flooding

Injuries: (general) none reported

Number of Personnel: 28

Equipment: 1 Engine Company, 2 Swift Water Teams, 1 Helicopter, 1 Ambulance, 5 Law Enforcement, 5 Command & Support

Agencies Involved: Ventura City Fire, Ventura Co Fire, Ventura Police, Ventura Co Sheriff, American Medical Response,

Narrative: The National Weather Service has predicted that the flow in the Ventura River will exceed flood thresholds as of 11:00 pm on 3/20/11. Per emergency preplans, the Ventura Fire and Police Departments directed the Ventura RV Park to evacuate. A total of seventy-one vehicles have been temporarily relocated to the parking lot at Seaside Park. Additionally, efforts have been made to directly contact people that might be camped or otherwise located in the Ventura River flood zone. Firefighters and swift water rescue teams rescued a total of twenty people and four dogs trapped by rising waters on an island in the middle of the river. An estimated twenty additional people were escorted from other river areas.

An emergency warming shelter has been established at “Project Understanding”, 43 W. Vince St., Ventura.
