Dog Fighting Ring in Raisinville Twp.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is reporting a dog fighting ring in Raisinville Township.

On March 5th, 2011 at approximately 10:30 PM, the Sheriff's Office received information from the United States Department of Agriculture Office of Inspector General of a large dog fighting ring that was actively participating in a gambling event where dogs were being fought at 527 Ida Maybee Rd. Monroe, Michigan.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Detective Bureau went into service and responded to meet with USDA OIG Agents. Information was received and a search warrant was obtained for the Raisinville Township residence.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office Special Response Team was activated to assist investigators.

On March 6th, 2011, at 1:35 AM Monroe County SRT executed a search warrant at the residence. Agents from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Sheriff's Office, Michigan State Police, Michigan Humane Society, and Monroe County Animal Control worked in conjunction to take eighteen (18) people into custody and confiscated five dogs at the residence. Two of the dogs were badly injured.

During the execution of the search warrant suspects fled the residence and evaded police for short period of time. The Sheriff's Office K-9 Team assisted with tracking the fleeing suspects throughout the county. Officers continued to search the area locating and arresting an additional eight (8) suspects connected to the dog fighting ring.

Evidence of dog fighting was located and seized including a dog training treadmill and a dog fighting ring within the garage. During the search investigators also located and seized a large quantity of cocaine and marijuana including over $40,000.00 in U.S. Currency and one suspect in possession of a handgun.

All persons involved are currently lodged at the Monroe County Jail and charged with multiple counts of Fighting Dogs. The charges for fighting dogs is a felony and could face up to 4 years imprisonment.

The suspects involved are from various areas throughout the United States including Ohio, Indiana, Georgia, Missouri and Detroit Michigan. Information was obtained that the two dogs involved were fighting for a championship match with multiple thousands of dollars being bet on the dogs.

The investigation is continued by the Sheriff's Office and U.S. Department of Agriculture Office of Inspector General.
