Technical rescue of critically injured fall victim

Date/Time of Incident: 02/13/2011, 2038hrs

Incident Location: Shannon Ave. at Kennebec St. (adjacent barranca area)

Cause: Accidental fall from rope swing

Injuries: 18 year old male, traumatic injuries from significant fall

Number of Personnel: 9

Narrative: Emergency personnel from the Ventura City Fire Department and American Medical Response responded to a report of an injured fall victim in the area of Shannon Ave. and Kennebec St. Upon arrival of emergency workers, it was determined that a 18 year old male had fallen approximately 30 feet from a rope swing into the barranca below and was seriously injured. The crews on scene worked rapidly to assess and treat the young man’s injuries and extricate him from the ravine. The teen was determined to have suffered serious injuries from the height of the fall. Due to the difficult location it took emergency personnel approximately 45 minutes to remove the patient to a waiting ambulance for transport to Ventura County Medical Center for more intensive trauma care.
