POLICE OFFICER FROM THE NETHERLANDS VISITS THE OCSO.

(Oklahoma City) January 10, 2011 Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel welcomed Officer Olaf Divendal of the Midden en West Brabant Regional Police of the Netherlands. Divendal was accompanied by OCSO Community Services supervisor Lt. Charles Avery. Officer Divendal is at the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) to learn how our agency specifically deals with community programs through our Community Services Division. "I am impressed with the different community services programs", said Divendal, "at my agency each officer deals with community issues, but unlike the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office we do not have a division that specifically handles community issues."

This is actually the second visit by an officer from the Midden en West Brabant agency. Nearly a year ago two officers came to Oklahoma City to get an overview of how the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office works. "This all started a couple of years ago at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference", said Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel. "I met with some command staff from Midden en West Brabant and they were very interested in learning from us, and how we deal with law enforcement issues in the U.S.".

Since arriving in Oklahoma City Officer Olaf Divendal has seen many of our community programs including TRIAD, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, Special Olympics, and our Latino Community programs among others. "Reaching out to the community is the best way to stay in touch with the community and keep open lines for both giving and receiving information", said Divendal.

While visiting with Sheriff Whetsel, Officer Divendal presented him with a traditional wooden shoe painted in the colors of the Middlen en West Brabant Police. The Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office is honored to have such a strong relationship with an international law enforcement agency that gives us the ability to learn from each other.
