Crime in the Antelope Valley has again been reduced for the third consecutive year thanks to the outstanding partnerships between community members, public officials and the deputies of the Lancaster and Palmdale Sheriff’s Stations of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

On the last day of 2010, the overall reported crime rate was 31% less than it was in 2006, and it was the fewest number of serious (Part I) recorded crimes in the Antelope Valley since the 1990's.

(The crime "rate" is the number crimes per 10,000 people. The Antelope Valley crime rate was 268, which is 31% less than in 2006. This is less than 9,900 serious (Part I) crimes being recorded. At the end of 2006, the overall crime rate for the Antelope Valley was 390 (Lancaster Station was at 420 and Palmdale Station was 360), with 13,425 Part l crimes recorded.)

Community frustration is prior years over rising crime led to an important Town Hall meeting where over 3,000 residents attended to voice their concerns. From that meeting, Sheriff Lee Baca and local public officials committed additional sheriff’s deputies and resources for the Antelope Valley, to assist the local sheriff’s stations and communities.

The overall goal was to reduce the Valley’s crime rate to below 300.

In March of 2007, the Antelope Valley Crime Fighting Initiative (AVCFI) was established in order to coordinate the new resources and crime reduction efforts.

Since 2006, valley-wide homicides have declined 51% (19 homicides valley-wide in 2010 compared to 39 in 2006), overall violent crime has been reduced 23%, and property crimes are down 28%.

The declines in crime within the two cities is equally impressive. With only a few hours left in the 2010, the city of Lancaster is holding onto a crime rate of 299 (34% less than 2006), and the city of Palmdale’s crime rate is at 271 (26% less than 2006). Both sheriff’s stations will release their individual 2010 crime statistics in January 2011.

None of these achievements over the last several years would have been possible without the tremendous collaboration among the valley’s law enforcement agencies, the political support from the city and county representatives, and most importantly the involvement of proactive residents living within the Antelope Valley.

Sheriff Baca and the deputies of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department made a commitment to the Antelope Valley in 2007, the valley accepted the challenge, and the goal of an increasingly safer valley is being achieved.

Sheriff Baca said, "This great partnership continues to make the Antelope Valley a safer place to live. We are all committed to continue to work together, with public safety as our priority."
