Residential structure fire

Date/Time of Incident: 11:15 hours on 12/16/2010

Incident Location: 300 block of S. Catalina St. Ventura, CA 93003

Cause: Under investigation at time of media release

Injuries: None, (two pet dogs perished due to smoke inhalation)

Number of Personnel: 28

Fire Equipment: 4 Medic Engines, 2 Medic Trucks, 3 Battalion Chiefs, 1 Assistant Chief, 1Fire Marshal, 4 Police officers

Agencies Involved: Ventura City FD, Ventura County FD, Santa Paula FD, Ventura Police Department

Damage Estimate: $50,000 structural, $25,000 to contents

Fire Protection Systems Present: None

Narrative: Fire units were responded to a reported structure fire. First arriving units found heavy smoke coming from a residential duplex. A fire was discovered to be under the raised floor, in the wall and also in the attic of the home. Firefighters acted quickly and aggressively to fight the fire and were able to contain it to one unit of the duplex. The fire was controlled within 20 minutes of arrival of the fire department however firefighters worked for several hours to fully extinguish the stubborn fire. The resident of the involved unit was not home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported although sadly, two pet dogs were discovered to have succumbed to the smoke. The cause was not easily determined and is currently under investigation. During the time of the fire there were also multiple other calls for service and fire units from The County of Ventura, City of Oxnard and City of Santa Paula responded to assist and provide coverage to the City of Ventura.
