At about 3:50 A.M. Saturday, October 10, 2009, patrol units were dispatched to the 4400 block of Baughman Court in reference to a female being bound and gagged. Upon arriving, the officers met with the victim’s boyfriend who reported that when he returned home, he found the front door wide open and his girlfriend was lying on the bedroom floor with her arms tied behind her back and a towel in her mouth. The “victim” reported she was in bed when she felt someone moving her and then she hit the floor and struck her head. The “victim” was unable to provide a description of the suspect or if she was sexually assaulted.

Detectives, as well as a forensic technician, were sent to the area to begin processing the scene for any possible evidence and to canvass the neighborhood for possible witnesses. The “victim” was taken to a local hospital. She was treated and released and was interviewed by detectives.

When confronted with the evidence and the results of the investigation, the “victim” recanted her statement and admitted to fabricating the story.

On December 2, 2009, Special Victims Detectives charged Donna Cheryl Ricks, 39, of the 4400 block of Baughman Court in Newport News, with one count of filing a false police report. Because she was released on a summons, no booking photo was taken. However a photograph is attached and it is an older picture.

While it is extremely important for the victims of any crime to make reports so that their cases can be investigated, this is another example of how a false report can generate a response that pulls patrol officers and investigators away from legitimate cases.
