Cleona Borough Police Awarded Grant

The Cleona Borough Police announced that they have been awarded a Grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. The funds are from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
The Police Department applied for the grant in the beginning of 2010 and was awarded funds in September totaling more than $7,000.00. The funds will be used to purchase speed timing equipment and supplies for conducting speed checks in the Borough.
Grant money was made available to police departments in Pennsylvania that did not already receive Federal Recovery funds. The funds available could only be used to purchase specific types of equipment including speed timing equipment.
Items that will be purchased include a wireless speed detection system called ENRADD and a VSPEC device. The ENRADD, which stands for Electronic Non-Radar Device, uses infrared beams to measure a car's speed as it passes through a section of road. A computer and display unit in a nearby vehicle calculates the vehicle's speed and displays the resulting number for the officer. The new device will replace an older ENRADD device that was purchased used but requires two officers to use. The new wireless device can be used by a single officer. The ENRADD device can also be used in locations within the Borough where traditional speed timing devices can not be used.
The VSPEC is a speed timing device that will be mounted in the departments new police vehicle. This device will be used when the weather or road conditions do not allow the use of the ENRADD device. The department specifically held off on purchasing this device when the new car was purchased hoping that it would receive the grant to cover the cost. The department saved the borough over $1,200.00.
Other items covered by the grant include installation of the equipment and calibrations for 1 year.
