A sheriff's deputy on patrol in Lancaster early Saturday morning nearly lost his life when he was shot at with an automatic weapon. At about 3:40AM, October 30, the deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a car for not having a front license plate (a vehicle code violation), near 10th Street West and Jackman Avenue, Lancaster.
As the deputy turned his marked sheriff's car around to pull up behind the suspects moving car, he heard one or two shots and saw a muzzle flash come from the car, directed at him. The deputy immediately broadcast over his sheriff's radio that he had been shot at by the suspects. They quickly sped off in their car and eluded the deputy. Assisting sheriff's deputies rapidly contained the immediate area.
The suspects were located shortly thereafter, as they attempted to drive their car out the contained area. Two suspects were taken into custody without incident (without the need for the use of force), and were arrested for felony assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
A fully loaded Tec-9 fully automatic firearm (See photos of the firearm via the hyperlink at the bottom of this message) was located on the curb in the street where the shooting took place. It was found to have a live round jammed in the chamber. There were over 20 live rounds found in the magazine. Neither the deputy nor his radio car were hit by gunfire. Sheriff's Operation Safe Streets (OSS) gang detectives are handling the investigation.
"Risks are always present for our deputies, even for a seemingly simple thing like no license plate. We are relieved our deputy wasn't killed, and so is he," said Captain Axel Anderson, Lancaster Sheriff's Station.
Suspects under arrest:
Christopher Orlando Pinn, male Black, 25 years old, resident of Lancaster, gang member on parole
Shayla Janelle Harper, female Black, 26 years old, resident of Lancaster
