SCV Sheriff's Recover $200,000 in Stolen Emergency Triage Equipment Initially Destined for California Hospitals

Santa Clarita Sheriff's Station investigation leads to recovery of nearly $200,000 in stolen property from a Saugus home –

Deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station's J-Team concluded a four week investigation early this morning with the service of a search warrant in the 21000 block of Kingscrest Road, Saugus.

Through the investigation, deputies learned that a Saugus man was believed to be in possession of several Temporary Mobile Medical Triage units, portable air conditioning and filtration systems and miscellaneous equipment used by hospitals in California in the event of a major emergency or disaster.

Deputies believe the equipment may have went missing as long as two years ago through theft or the interruption of a large shipment from Ohio. Early information indicates much of the equipment may have been earmarked for or delivered to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia.

Arrested at the home was Derek Gainer, MW/39, of Saugus. He was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station on felony charges of grand theft and receiving stolen property. He also had an outstanding warrant for grand theft in the amount of $30,000. He is being held in lieu of $130,000 bail pending future court proceedings.

Officials from Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital are working closely with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station as the investigation continues into exactly how and when the equipment went missing.

At the location deputies also recovered a box trailer, a recreational vehicle trailer, and two jet skis they believe are stolen.

The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information available at this time. Anyone with information should contact Sergeant Wachsmuth at (661) 277-2310 -ref 17567
