Six Naples Police Officers Graduate from Crisis Intervention Team Training

Six Naples Police Officers Graduate from Crisis Intervention Team Training – “CIT”

Six Naples Police Officers attended and graduated from Crisis Intervention Team Training the week of June 8th thru the 12th. The training is sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness – NAMI, Collier County Sheriff’s Office – CCSO and the Naples Police and Fire Department. The training was held in the meeting room of the Naples Utilities Building.

CIT Training has proven to be an effective tool in reducing response to resistance incidents and arrests of the mentally ill in crisis, along with the reduction in injuries to Law Enforcement and the mentally ill.

With CIT Training participants understand and recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness. They are able to recognize whether those signs and symptoms represent a crisis situation. They are informed on how to de-escalate mental illness crises. They learn where to take individuals in crisis and the appropriate steps in following up on these crises with community providers. They also learn about jail diversion options.

Some of the benefits of CIT trained officers are: Crisis response is immediate. Arrest and response to resistance has decreased. Underserved mentally ill are identified by officers and provided with care. Officers are better trained and educated in verbal de-escalation techniques. Officer injuries during crisis events have declined. Officer recognition and appreciation by the community increases and less “victimless” crime arrests are made.

There are twenty-three CIT Officers within the Naples Police and Fire Department. The goal of the sponsoring agencies and NAMI is to hold six sessions per year and ultimately train every law enforcement officer within the City and the County.
