Chief Dolan’s statement regarding the death of David Smith
Statement by Chief Dolan:
“This is a tragic situation, and on behalf of the Minneapolis Police Department, I would like to extend our sympathies to the family of David Smith. The unfortunate reality is that in any situation where use of force is required, police officers can act appropriately and still have a tragic result.
This incident is being investigated by the Minneapolis Police Department’s Internal Affairs and Homicide Units. Based upon our initial review it appears that the officers followed proper protocol and policies. In accordance with our standard procedures, we will be forwarding this matter to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office for their review and presentation to a Grand Jury. We will also complete a thorough Internal Affairs investigation.
This was a difficult situation and traumatic for all involved.”
