Plano Police Shooting Update

Plano Police Shooting Update

On October 13, 2010, at approximately 10:50 p.m., undercover officers from the Plano Police Department Narcotics Unit were conducting a buy/bust operation in the parking lot of a restaurant located near the intersection of Frankford Road and Dallas Parkway. As an arrest was attempted a Plano narcotics sergeant fired one round from his handgun striking the suspect, Michael Alcala (date of birth 2-14-85). Mr. Alcala was transported thereafter to Parkland Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

This shooting is being investigated by the Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit. While the investigation is in its early stages, preliminary evidence suggests that this was an accidental shooting. Detectives from the Special Investigations Unit will work with the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the exact cause of death and the circumstances of the shooting.

Following completion of the Dallas Police Department's criminal investigation, detectives from the Plano Police Department's Professional Standards Unit will begin an internal review of the shooting. That review will examine policy and procedural issues related to the undercover operation and the shooting.
