Overall Crime Continues to Decline in Communities Policed by the LASD - 3rd Quarter 2010 (Jan.-Sept. 2010)

As of September 30, 2010, preliminary crime data shows that criminal homicides in Sheriff’s patrol areas have decreased by 15.09 percent, compared to the same year-to-date period last year (160 homicides last year compared to 134 this year). This follows a five-year continuous decrease, resulting in a 50.55 percent decrease in homicides compared to five years ago, and the lowest homicide rate since 1975. Most notable were decreases in homicides in the Compton Station area (including the city of Compton and nearby unincorporated areas) and Century Station area (which includes the city of Lynwood and nearby unincorporated areas). Compton Station homicides have reduced by 44.44 percent, with 36 homicides last year compared to 20 this year. Century Station had 28 homicides during the same period last year, as compared to 22 homicides this year, for a 21.9 percent decrease.

Reported incidents of violent crimes (Part I) have declined 3.57 percent, and serious property crimes (Part I) have declined by 3.45 percent in Sheriff’s patrol areas countywide, compared to last year at this time. These numbers combine to show a 3.47 percent decrease in overall Part I crimes. Sheriff’s stations experiencing the most significant decreases in overall violent crimes (Part I) over the same period last year included Marina del Rey Station at 30.7 percent, Walnut Station at 29.2 percent, Industry Station at 25.8 percent, and Altadena Station at 22.1 percent.
