Charges filed in last weekend’s homicide

This morning the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office filed charges in the October 2nd vehicle related homicide that occurred at 1012 39th Avenue North.

On that day just after 7 am patrol officers from the Fourth Precinct responded to a 911 report of a personal injury accident at the address. When they arrived they found two males with significant injuries from having been struck by a vehicle and damage to a front porch of one home and the garage door of another. One of the injured men, Maurice Meeks, was taken to North Memorial Medical Center where he passed away. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that Meeks’ death was a homicide. The other male (noted as E.J. in the complaint), was also taken to North Memorial Medical Center for treatment. Officers at the scene were told that the driver of a vehicle had intentionally targeted Meeks and run him over.

\A patrol officer responding to the 1012 39th Avenue North call saw a vehicle running on only three wheels leaving the area of the incident at a high rate of speed. The officer eventually stopped this car and found that there was blood on the outside of the vehicle and there was damage to the exterior of the vehicle. The driver was taken into custody and was found to be related to the initial call.

Investigators learned that the defendant in this case, Amecia Navro Enge, AKA Amico Johnson (Date of birth 9-4-1983), who was driving the car, had gotten into an argument with the victim Meeks and then a physical fight in the street. The defendant then got into his car and ran over E.J. twice, backed into a car in the driveway of a nearby home and then drove directly at a group of people, including Meeks, who were near the porch at 1012 39th Avenue North. Enge’s car struck Meeks and the porch. As Enge fled the scene he ran over Meeks again.

Victim E.J. was released from North Memorial Medical Center on October 4th but died later that day at his home. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet identified E.J. or determined his cause of death.

As a result of this investigation the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office charged Enge this morning with:

Murder in the Second Degree (Felony) 609.19, Subd. 1(1)

Attempted Murder in the Second Degree (Felony) 609.19, Subd. 1(1); 609.17

Attempted Murder in the Second Degree (Felony) 609.19, Subd. 1(1); 609.17

Attempted Murder in the Second Degree (Felony) 609.19, Subd. 1(1); 609.17

Minneapolis Police Homicide investigators Sergeants John Holthusen and Christopher Gaiters worked with the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office to ensure charging in this case.

Enge is currently in custody at the Hennepin County Jail and a booking photo is not available.

The PIO contact for this release is Sgt. William Palmer. The CCN is 10-302147.
