Attempted fraud. Citizen received a call, said they won prize. Told to wire money to claim prize.

The Lower Paxton Police is reporting an attempted fraud, which occurred on November 18th. In this case a resident received an unsolicited phone call. The caller was a male, who said he was from Jamaica and spoke with a Jamaican accent. The caller stated that the citizen had won a 2.5 million prize. To claim the prize, the citizen needed to wire money through Western Union to the caller. The citizen recognized this as a scam and reported it to the Police.

We caution the public, that if you receive an unsolicited e-mail, letter or phone call, telling you have won something. That 99 percent of the time it is a fraud; when in order to claim your prize, you need to wire money. Once you wire money, it can be claimed anywhere in the world and it is practically impossible to reclaim. We encourage the public to look out for each other. Should you have a friend or neighbor who receives a similar call, tell them not to wire any money. They should contact the Police and we will verify the authenticity of the call.
