Update: MAN IN CRITICAL CONDITION FOLLOWING TRAFFIC CRASH

Update 9/21/10: Mr. Len Joachim died from his injuries at the hospital on Monday, September 20, 2010. The investigation is continuing and the investigating officer will consult with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office concerning any additional charges.

MAN IN CRITICAL CONDITION FOLLOWING TRAFFIC CRASH

On Saturday, September 18, 2010 at about 1:50 A.M. a 2001 Dodge Durango being operated by Bernard T. Sumpter, 32, of the 800 block Lancaster Ct, Newport News, was travelling northbound on Jefferson Ave at Francisco Way. The Dodge crossed into the southbound lanes and was struck in the right side by a 2003 Chrysler Van. The van, being operated by a 58-year old Newport News woman remained in the right southbound lane of Jefferson Ave. The Dodge continued to cross onto the sidewalk and overturned striking a bicyclist, Len Joachim, 21, of the 400 block of Lester Road in Newport News. The Dodge came to rest, overturned on Francisco Way.

Mr. Joahim was transported, by medics to a local hospital where he is listed in critical condition. The occupants of the van were treated at a local hospital for what appeared non-life threatening injuries. Mr. Sumpter and his passenger were also treated at a local hospital for what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.

Mr. Sumpter has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended or revoked operator’s license and reckless driving. Any additional charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
