When Does My License Plate Expire? See email for full story.

Hello Nixle readers,

Today's question is simple yet one that causes confusion for many drivers. Most drivers who are pulled over for driving on expired plates have been told by friends or family that their tags expire at the end of their birthday month. Not true! Typically a registration is going to expire at the stroke of midnight on your birthday - Happy Birthday!

Unfortunately all rules have exceptions and expired registrations do as well. Leased vehicles will typically expired at either the end of June or December. Rental vehicles also have their own unique expiration date. Some vehicles are registered in multiple names and therefore the birthday rule applies to the first name appearing on the registration. If ever in doubt simply pull out your registration where you will find the exact date of expiration.

This reminds me of the story of a police officer who was patrolling the local interstate in his jurisdiction when he spotted a vehicle traveling at 26 mph. Since the minimum speed on the Interstate was 50 mph, he pulled the vehicle over. Upon speaking with the driver and informing her of why she was pulled over she replied, "But officer I think you're mistaken, I clearly remember seeing a sign that read 26 as I entered the highway." The officer replied, "Yes that's true, but that sign was referring to the name of the highway which is Interstate 26." At this point the officer spotted a passenger who was clenching onto her seat, white as a ghost, with a look of fear in her eyes. The officer promptly asked if she was ok and the driver responded, "I'm not sure what's wrong with her officer, but she's been like that ever since we exited Interstate 160!"

Have a great weekend.
