Houston, September 17, 2010 – The discussion this month at the Near Northwest Management District’s Security Meeting focused on theft prevention. Both Harris County Constables and Houston Police Department officers are seeing a rise in thefts from vehicles.
Both are seeing a dramatic rise in thefts from cars during the day where windows are broken to remove valuables.

District law enforcement officers expect these types of crimes to increase between now and the first of the year and offer the following advice to decrease the chance of becoming a victim of these kinds of thefts:
• If you are going to secure items by placing them in the trunk of your car, do so before arriving at your destination. Thieves who see you place valuables in the trunk will simply break the window and open the trunk from inside the car if they know there is something in the trunk worth stealing.
• Record the serial and model numbers for all items. This is the single most likely way of retrieving items once they have been stolen. It is illegal to possess items that have no serial number so thieves don’t remove them because if they do the item can no longer be sold. If you can report the serial number of a stolen item and it is found in a pawn shop, the shop can’t sell it and the police can return it to you.

An additional topic of discussion among attendees at the Security Meeting was the effectiveness of crime prevention assessments by Deputy Art St. John. Businesses who have taken advantage of this free service have been very pleased with the level of detail that Deputy St. John offers in his recommendation for security improvements. Any business in the Near Northwest Management District can contact Deputy St. John to request this service by contacting him at 713-895-8021 x208.

Monthly Security meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 9 am in the District offices at 5300 Hollister. All area business owners and managers and their security personnel are invited to attend.
