The Crime Prevention Unit of the APD is aware of at least two calls from suspicious citizens reporting what were described as "clean-cut" looking college age males selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door. The calls came from two different areas of town. The solicitors told the people that contacted us that they were raising money for a trip for their college choir. The magazine subscriptions they are selling were supposedly sent not to the person donating, but to military personnel posted overseas.
At this point, Amarillo College has verified that they have no such fundraiser in progress. WTAMU's Student Affairs office reports that they are not aware that any such fundraiser is under way. This conflicts with what the suspicious salesmen have said.
The individuals that are doing this have been described as clean-cut looking and convincing. They provided the homeowner with no receipt for the donation or were unable to produce documentation that their work was authorized. If you come into contact with any door-to-door solicitors, remember that you can request their registration with the city. Each solicitor is required to carry it with them. If you have made a purchase or donation under these circumstances, you may wish to verify that the transaction was completed/check was cashed on behalf of the group or organization that you made the donation to and for the amount you intended.
If you are suspicious of any person seeking donations by any method, remember that legitimate charities will not object to your taking the time to verify their status and accountability.
