The "100 Deadly Days of Summer" have passed and we actually have some good news.

There is some good news now that Labor Day has passed and we have reached the end of another "100 Deadly Days of Summer". In South Carolina, traffic fatalities decreased by 100 over the same time period last year. In Lancaster, York and Chester counties, fatalities were cut in half from 2009. This was largely due to strict enforcement of seat belt laws, speeding laws, and DUI arrests. Over the summer the Sheriff’s Office Community Action Team has focused heavily on traffic enforcement and we have participated in several large-scale highway safety checkpoints with other members of the 6th Circuit Law Enforcement Network.

Even with these decreases, one fatality is too many. Each death in a traffic collision represents a family who has lost a loved one. Please be careful and drive defensively. Drive like your life depends on it, it does.
