How Important is Renters Insurance? See email for full story.

In 1997, an apartment complex in Altamonte Springs experienced a major structure fire which destroyed the contents of 24 units. Out of the 24 victims only one had signed up for renters insurance. The following morning, I began randomly surveying apartment residents on their knowledge of renters insurance. 9 out 10 people I surveyed responded they did not have insurance because of the additional expense.

When I asked how much they thought it cost - the most common reply was around a $100.00 a month. To the residents surprise I informed them that for $20,000 worth of coverage the rate would be $8.00 a month or $96.00 a year. The residents could not believe their ears when they heard how affordable it is to own a renters insurance policy. Additionally, they were surprised to hear that the policy not only covers fire but also burglary and theft as well. Some of whom I surveyed were under the impression that the landlords home insurance policy covered the renter’s contents as well, which is not the case! A landlord’s insurance policy only covers damage to the physical building itself excluding contents.

Life passes us by very quickly and one never thinks a tragedy will happen to them. The image of the fire that day and of those victims arriving home from work is still freshly burned in my mind. To look into the eyes of the victims was to see a look of complete devastation, a look of despair, helplessness, homelessness, a look of complete confusion as if they were living a nightmare waiting for someone to pinch them and make an awful dream go away.

Fortunately, no human lives perished in the tragedy. Unfortunately many memories went up in smoke that can never be replaced. Imagine walking out your front door tomorrow morning and when you come back everything you own has vanished. Would you be devastated? Of course you would! Now let me ask you, would it be easier for you to recover from that devastation if you received a check for $20,000 for your losses.

Renters insurance offers that protection for the cost of one less fast food meal a month. Can you afford renters insurance? The better question is, can you afford not to have renters insurance? Please share this article with your friends and family who rent a residential housing unit.

Have a safe day!
