PORTSMOUTH- The City of Portsmouth has begun making preparations to respond to possible damage from Hurricane Earl, and strongly urges all residents to register their cell phones with the Code Red alert system now in order to receive emergency updates if necessary.

The Code Red Community Notification (reverse 911) System gives City officials the ability to quickly deliver emergency messages to targeted areas or the entire city to telephone numbers registered in the database. Residents and businesses are encouraged to log onto the Community Notification Website at to register their address, landline and cell phone numbers. Those without Internet access may register via a public computer at the Library.

The City’s Emergency Management Team met Thursday to ensure that Fire, Police, Public Works and other City Departments are prepared to respond to potential storm damage from Hurricane Earl when it reaches New England late Friday or early Saturday. At this time, there are no plans to open the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC). However, City officials will be closely monitoring the storm’s progress as it moves up the East Coast.

Residents also are urged to sign up for the City’s Community Newsletter at as it has the capacity to convey additional details in the event of an emergency, as well as regularly transmit important information about City activities every other Wednesday.

If additional public updates are necessary during the weekend, they will be transmitted in Community Newsletter special alerts and/or via the Code Red system, posted at and sent to local news media outlets.
