One seriously injured, one killed in a pair accidents this afternoon in Northeast Minneapolis

August 30, 2010 (MINNEAPOLIS) This evening the Minneapolis Police Department’s Traffic Unit is investigating a pair of accidents this afternoon in Northeast Minneapolis that left one dead, one in very critical condition and least one other person in the hospital.

Just after 2:45 pm officers in the Second Precinct responded to a report of an accident at 15th Avenue Northeast and Monroe Street Northeast. When officers arrived they found a male cyclist who appeared to be in his 30’s critically injured. The investigators handling this accident believe that the cyclist was on a motorized bicycle when he entered the intersection from the west on 15th Avenue NE and was struck by a minivan travelling south on Monroe Street NE. The driver of minivan showed signs of intoxication and provided a preliminary breath sample above the legal limit. He was booked into Hennepin County Jail for PC Criminal Vehicular Operation. Though earlier described erroneously by the MPD as being deceased, as of 8:30 tonight the bicyclist was listed as being in “very grim” condition and undergoing surgery at HCMC.

In the second incident which occurred just before 4:30 pm officers responded to a report of an accident at the intersection of Hennepin Avenue East and Central Avenue Southeast. Investigators believe that two vehicles, one eastbound on Hennepin Avenue and one northbound on Central Avenue collided in the intersection of these streets. One of the vehicles, a midsize car, had two elderly females in it. From statements given by witnesses it is likely that the driver of this car was having a medical emergency prior to the accident. The car with the two elderly females then smashed into a pole. The passenger in this car was deceased at the scene and the driver was taken to HCMC. The driver’s condition is unknown. The other vehicle involved in this accident, an SUV, struck a school bus containing 10 children after the initial collision. No one on the school bus was injured and the driver of the SUV was not injured seriously either.

Both of these accidents required extensive investigative work and the final cause determinations will not be completed for several weeks. Additionally chemical testing results for the minivan driver in the Monroe Street accident will not be immediately available.

The CCN for the Monroe accident is 10-265038. The CCN for the Hennepin accident is 10-265121. The PIO contact for both of these cases is Sgt. William Palmer. As of this point neither CAPRS report is complete.
