Earl shifts slightly west - may come within 35 miles of Outer Banks; Fiona still Tropical Storm; Gaston may be next
Hurricane Earl remains a Category 4 and has shifted slightly west. Forecasts indicate Earl may come within 35 miles of the North Carolina Coast. Earl has rain bands extending 215 miles so NC could experience heavy rains. Where and how much the hurricane will affect the NC coast is dependent on a low pressure system moving east from the midwest that has appeared to have stalled at this time. NC could experience weather related to Earl Thursday night/Friday morning. People in the affected area should be finalizing the hurricane preparedness plans and emergency supplies. See the Leland PD blog listing recommended supplies at www.lelandpolice.blogspot.com.
Fiona remains a tropical storm and the projected tract appears to be taking it farther into the Atlantic and away from the east coast.
Another wave has been detected off the African coast and may form into Gaston, the next tropical event, in the next day or two.
