INCIDENT ON BEACONSFIELD AND DAMMAN THIS AFTERNOON
October 28, 2009
Harper Woods Officers responded to Beaconsfield and Damman at approximately 2:20 pm on a report of a man being assaulted by another man. Officers arrived and were informed by the victim of the assault that he was turning the corner onto Damman from Beaconsfield when a male pedestrian crossing the street punched the side of his van. The victim stopped his van and tried to speak to the suspect. The suspect immediately began punching the victim in his upper body and head. The victim has a valid Concealed Weapons Permit and he pulled his handgun out in order to protect himself and stop the assault. The suspect saw the weapon and ran off. Harper Woods Officers located the suspect two streets away and after a foot chase apprehended him on Woodmont. We have received many calls regarding rumors spreading through the community that there was a man with a gun at Harper Woods High School. THE RUMOR IS COMPLETELY FALSE. This incident occurred off school property and at no time were any of the students or the general public in danger. The school was not locked down. The victim received minor injuries from the attack.
The suspect is a male 19 year old Harper Woods resident and he is being held on felony Aggravated Assault and Attempted Malicious Destruction of Property charges.
The victim is a member of the Harper Woods Board of Education but it is coincidental that the incident occurred near Harper Woods High School, the victim was not acting in any capacity as a member of the School Board.
