On Friday evening, 8/20/2010, Newport News Police Department Organized Crime Division detectives conducted a surveillance operation on an individual reportedly selling stolen goods. During a traffic stop in the parking lot of the New Market South shopping center detectives recovered a significant amount of property (safes, assorted jewelry, rare coins, cash, hand guns and long guns, live ammunition, prescription and illegal drugs and burglary tools) in the possession of a 27-year-old Hayes, Virginia man.

Police believe the seized items are valued at over $100,000, and are the proceeds of burglaries committed in surrounding jurisdictions. Newport News detectives are working with surrounding jurisdictions in an effort to identify owners of the recovered property so that it may be returned.

Police arrested James Stephen Massengill, of the 4300 block of Millen Lane in Hayes. He is currently charged with possession of Marijuana, two (2) counts of possession of a schedule I or II drug, possession with intent to sell/manufacture a schedule I or II drug, possess a firearm while in possession of a schedule I or II drug, buy or receive stolen goods and receive stolen and/or aid in concealing firearms. He remains in the Newport News City Jail on no Bond. Additional charges are pending. A photo accompanies this release.

Media are welcomed to video/photograph the recovered property, firearms and drugs today between 11:30 and 12:30 A.M. in the PIO Office at Police Headquarters. Interviews may also be conducted at that time.
