Local Scam targets elderly.

Recently, we became aware of suspicious activity that may have also happened in surrounding areas. A local woman says that she was manipulated into withdrawing all the money in her bank account after being approached by a man and a woman at HEB in Bastrop. The man and woman were very persuasive and were able to talk the elderly lady into withdrawing all the funds in her account in exchange for diamonds they would give her, which were fake. She says she felt compelled by them and even though she knew better, she withdrew the money and gave it to them.
Although many people don't believe they could ever be talked into doing something like this, unfortunately, this couple has reportedly used this scam on others in surrounding communities. They even coach their victim about what to say to the bank and how to act when making the withdrawal.
Please, be on the lookout and tell your friends and family to be cautious if they are approached by a stranger in a public place. Whatever they are offering is probably too good to be true.

If you have information to report that could help lead to an arrest in this crime/crime activity, please contact police.
