Newport News is temporarily suspending the PhotoSafe red light enforcement program at Oyster Point Road and Jefferson Avenue due to issues with the equipment. Once the issues have been addressed to the City’s satisfaction, the program will resume with a new thirty-day warning period after which violators will be sent notices of the $50 fee for a violation.

The equipment issues came to the attention of the officer assigned to the PhotoSafe program as he reviewed violations and spoke with the contactor regarding his observations. The equipment issues involve wiring problems causing the flash devices and video cameras to not work properly.

It is important for the community to understand that, while warning notices were sent, no notices to pay the fee for a violation had been sent from this intersection.

It is also important for the community to understand that the Mercury Boulevard/Jefferson Avenue and the Denbigh Boulevard/Jefferson Avenue intersections have not experienced equipment issues that would cause motorists to incorrectly receive a violation notice.
