Newport News Police Department
Thursday August 19th, 2010 :: 05:26 p.m. EDT

The Newport News Police Department will hold three “Field of Friends” events during August (one in each precinct). The first event will take place at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club at 429 Thorncliff Drive on Friday, August 6, 2010, from 10:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M.

The “Field of Friends” program is a means for the Department to maintain relationships throughout the community, in particular with the youth, by giving children and young adults the chance to play games, enjoy rides and food and get free school supplies (while they last), all while interacting with police officers.

Field of Friends began in 2007 when a police officer spotted several children playing in a maggot-infested dumpster.

“Field of Friends” is now in its fourth year and enjoys support from the Sheriff’s Office, the Fire Department, the Newport News Hispanic Advisory Committee and the Redevelopment, and Housing Authority. Other sponsors include Newport News Public Schools, Newport News Public Libraries, Newport News Departments of Engineering, Public Works and Parks, Recreation and Tourism. Volunteer assistance is being provided by members of the Newport News Police Academy Alumni Association and the Newport News Neighborhood Watch Coalition.

Dates and times for the remaining Field of Friends events are:

• Saturday, Aug. 7 in the South Precinct, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at An Achievable Dream Academy, 726 16th St.
• Saturday, Aug. 21 in the Central Precinct, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club, 705 Adams Drive
