Davie Police has important Halloween Safety Tips for the community!

Davie Police would like to remind everyone Halloween is fast approaching and will be here in only 9 more days.

Halloween is an exciting time for young children and the young at heart. If you plan on letting your children go trick or treating we would ask that all parents go over the following safety tips with their children.

Check all of your children's treats before they eat them. Throw away any treats that have been opened or are in torn wrappers.

Suspicious of tampered candy should be reported to your Police Department.

Be sure walking areas are well-lit and free of obstacles.

Keep homes safe for visiting trick-or-treaters, remove anything a child could trip over such as garden hoses, toys, bikes and lawn decorations.

If no sidewalk is available, walk at the far edge of the roadway facing traffic.

Go to houses on the same side of the street and when completed go to the other side of the street. Avoid crisscrossing the road.

Cross only at corners or crosswalks: never cross between parked cars or in the middle of the block.

Only go to homes with a porch light on. Never enter the home, apartment, or car for a treat of someone you don't know.

Keep candle-lit jack-o’-lanterns and away from doorsteps, walkways, landings, and curtains. Keep them out of the reach of pets and small children, and never leave them unattended.

Drivers if you must be out remember to slow down.
Please drive cautiously and be on the lookout for children.

A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children.

For older children going alone, plan the route that is acceptable to you. Agree on a specific time when they should return home.

Stay in a group and communicate where your children will be going.

Carry a cell phone for quick communication.

Remain on well-lit streets and always use the sidewalk when available.

Never cut across yards or use alleys.

Don't assume the right of way. Motorists may have trouble seeing Trick-or-Treaters.

Do not leave your pet out in the yard on Halloween. Often, pets don't fare well on Halloween.

Keep pets, especially outdoor cats, inside several days before and several days after Halloween.

Chocolate is poisonous to many animals and tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed.

Notify your local Police agency immediately of any suspicious or unlawful activity.

The Davie Police would like everyone to have a safe and happy Halloween.
