Paul Krekorian Appoints Ayla Stern to Bicycle Advisory Committee

LOS ANGELES - Councilmember Paul Krekorian appointed Ayla Stern of Sherman Oaks to the Los Angeles Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC). Ms. Stern becomes the first woman in at least a decade to serve on the BAC from Council District Two and is the only woman currently serving on the committee.

"Ayla Stern is a dedicated cyclist who has made the often-challenging choice of living in Los Angeles car-free," Councilmember Paul Krekorian said. "Ms. Stern has advocated for improved bicycle access throughout the San Fernando Valley while also working to ensure public safety for women cyclists. She is an effective collaborator with a community-minded approach to policy analysis and a talent for educating the public on bike issues. She will be a great addition to the BAC and a strong and effective voice for the city’s bicyclists.”

Ayla Stern has made her mark by working with such organizations as the Valley Glen Neighborhood Council's Public Safety Committee and The Valley Bikery. She has also been an advocate for a "Bikeway Backbone Network" linking bicycle-friendly thoroughfares throughout the city.

Councilmember Krekorian has repeatedly stood with the bicycle community in advocating for safer streets. As a former member of the California State Assembly, he authored Assembly Bill 766, legislation that aimed to deliver greater control to local municipalities in regulating speed limits in their neighborhood. The bill, derailed by special interest groups, was lauded by neighborhood groups and much of the bicycle community.

The Bicycle Advisory Committee advises the Los Angeles Department of Transportation and the Planning Department on issues relevant to bicycling for transportation and the implementation of the city's Bicycle Plan. The BAC also advises the Department of Recreation and Parks on issues regarding recreational bicycling. Their website is
