POLICE INVESTIGATE FOURTEENTH HOMICIDE OF 2010

On Friday, July 23, 2010 at approximately 6:58 P.M. communications received a call of a male shot in the stomach at 27th Street and Chestnut Avenue. When officers arrived, they located an 18-year-old male, lying in a small parking lot, suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was taken to an area hospital and pronounced deceased at 8:10 P.M. The victim has been identified as Darrell Lorenzo Johnson, 18, with a last known address in the 1200 block of 23rd Street in Newport News.

Approximately 5 minutes later, an officer was flagged down by a citizen in the 1000 block of 27th Street. At that location, the officer located a 19-year-old male who had been shot in the leg. A citizen had observed three males running down 27th Street and notice that one of the males had been shot in the leg and offered to call police. Before that call could be made, an officer drove by and the citizen flagged him down. The 19-year-old shooting victim was transported to an area hospital with a non-life threatening injury.

The two other males who had been with the 19-year-old shooting victim were interviewed by detectives and released.
