Copper Caper Criminal Captured Quickly

On 07/27/10 an unknown person(s) entered the campus of John Muir Elementary (205 Vista Way, Martinez) during the hours of darkness and removed numerous amounts of copper pipes and wiring from the school’s cooling system. This cooling system was secured by a cinder block wall, which the suspect(s) climbed over. The removal of the copper pipes and wiring resulted in damage estimated to be in excess of $10,000.



Due to the frequency of copper thefts in the area, a MUSD maintenance employee went to several local metal recycling centers and located copper fittings that were stolen from the school. A Martinez PD patrol officer was called and he conducted an investigation which lead to possible suspects in this case and the seizure of copper fittings stolen from the school.



On 08/02/10 at approximately 1400 hours officers from the Martinez Police Department and Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department conducted a probation search at 1030 Delacy Avenue, which in is unincorporated Martinez. Upon arrival at the location Jason Crites was stopped leaving the residence. He was contacted and additional stolen copper was recovered. Crites was arrested for Possession of Stolen Property.



During the probation search three other people were contacted at the residence and were arrested for being under the influence of a controlled substance.

HAMILTON, Gary 62 years Martinez (Under influence of a drug)

NELSON, Delaura 47 years Martinez (Under influence of a drug and a drug warrant)

WEISS, Charlene 29 years Martinez (Under influence of a drug)



Crites and Nelson were booked into the Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez.



Hamilton and Weiss were cite released from the station.
