27th Annual National Night Out event will be held on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 from 6:00-9:00 p.m.

The Benicia Police Department announces the 27th Annual National Night Out event will be held on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 from 6:00-9:00 p.m.

This national event encourages local Neighborhood Watch groups across the country to participate by hosting special events in their neighborhoods. The event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Along with traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, neighborhoods are encouraged to celebrate by coming together to host outdoor potlucks, BBQ's and activities for the kids.

Last year over 10,000 communities across the United States and Canada participated in the National Night Out event. The event has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program to promote neighborhood and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation.

Locally, the Benicia Police Department has over 30 Neighborhood Watch groups registered with the Police Department and this year there will six neighborhoods participating by hosting a block party in their neighborhoods. "We have several active neighborhood watch groups that will be participating this year; Panorama Drive, Shannon Court, Buena Vista, East K Street, Vecino Drive, and Eastland Estates," states Patti Baron, Benicia Police Department Neighborhood Watch Program Coordinator.

The Benicia Police Department along with the Benicia Fire Department and members from BERT (Benicia Emergency Response Teams) will be visiting the participating neighborhoods.

"National Night out continues to grow every year in Benicia. It is a time where neighborhoods can get together with members from the Benicia Police Department and we emphasize the importance of community involvement in keeping Benicia safe. Neighborhoods banding together, actively reporting suspicious activity and watching out for each other can make a huge difference in preventing crime and apprehending subjects that prey on our residents" says Chief Sandra Spagnoli.
