The Martinez Police Department conducted a DUI / Driver License checkpoint during the evening of 07/24/10 in the 3700 block of Alhambra Avenue. The actual screening of vehicles took place between 7:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

During the evening, many citizens reported they were aware of the checkpoint and aware of the dangers of driving while intoxicated. During the three and a half hours officers were actually screening vehicles, officers arrested one subject for driving while intoxicated. Officers also arrested one pedestrian for public intoxication.

In addition to the arrests, officers issued 3 citations for driving on a suspended license, 7 citations for being an unlicensed driver and officers gave several warnings to drivers for various violations of the vehicle code. A total of 563 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. All of the drivers of these vehicles were screened by officers.

The Martinez Police Department was able to fund this operation due a grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Martinez Police Department also received assistance during this operation from the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department Avoid Campaign personnel. This combined effort made for a safe and successful operation.
