US 40 CONSTRUCTION: SW 5th, 3rd, 2nd, College Avenue Close This Wed-Fri for paving

INDOT will close South West 5th, 3rd and 2nd streets and College Avenue on the south side of U.S. Highway 40 this week for paving activities. Milestone plans to place the asphalt base and a drainage layer at those intersections this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Closures will be intermittent.

Next week, a concrete crew is scheduled to pour curbs and gutters. This will require intersecting streets to be closed again.

The $9 million U.S. 40 Major Moves project calls for full-depth pavement replacement of the four 12-foot travel lanes and the addition of a 14-foot continuous median which will serve as a center left turn lane. There will be a raised pedestrian island at SW 7th Street and a pedestrian-activated signaled crossing area between SW 8th and the main entrance to Earlham College. Scope of the project also includes a new 106-foot bridge at Clear Creek, storm sewers, curbs, gutters and ADA-complaint sidewalks on both sides of the roadway.
