GUN BUY-BACK PROGRAM IN ELIZABETH
ELIZABETH, NJ July 13, 2010—Mayor Chris Bollwage announces a “Cash for Guns” program scheduled to take place July 17th and 24th at Police Headquarters, One Police Plaza, Elizabeth. The initiative is made possible with a generous donation made by an anonymous source. The program is being administered in partnership with the City of Elizabeth, Union County Prosecutors Office, Union County Sheriff Office, and the Elizabeth Police Department.
“Safeguarding neighborhoods remains a priority throughout our City,” stated Mayor Bollwage, “providing this open and question-free program, combined with a secure location to turn in firearms, improves the quality of life for all residents.”
The “Cash for Guns” program will offer participants cash for turning-in a firearm. The amount of cash individuals receive will depend on the weapon: assault handguns (UZIs) or assault rifles…$200 each / handguns (semi-auto pistols & revolvers)…$150 each / rifles/shotguns…$75 each.
"Not only is this a good chance to get some money for unwanted guns, it also helps to ensure that they never fall into the wrong hands," said Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow. "Too often we see once-legal firearms obtained by criminals and used in violent crimes. Turning in unwanted guns is the responsible thing to do."
Police officials ask that any weapon brought into police headquarters for the program be free of ammunition. They also ask that safety locks be left on weapons and that participants should make sure the weapon is secure.
“Any opportunity to get guns off the streets is worth doing and goes a long way to keeping our neighborhoods and families safe,” stated Union County Sheriff Ralph Froehlich.
If funding is available, the program will be extended to August 14th and 21st. For more information, call 908-558-2106.
