INCIDENT: Gloucester Township Police Roll Out New Problem Solving Police Strategy To Maximize Efficiency During Nationwide Difficult Economic Times

LOCATION: Gloucester Township Police Headquarter, 1261 Chews Landing Rd., Laurel Springs, NJ 08021

The Gloucester Township Police Department will hold a news conference on Thursday July 8, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Gloucester Township Municipal Building, Police Operations Center, 1261 Chews Landing Road. Chief Harry Earle and Mayor David Mayer will provide an overview of the recently implemented operational changes to the Gloucester Township Police Department. These changes include a new problem solving police strategy that focuses on tactics to produce long term solutions in addressing crime and quality of life issues. As part of this response process, numerous Township of Gloucester officials and police personnel meet weekly at the Quality of Life Meeting to develop specific responses to identified problems. Additionally, police resources are now deployed based on the outcome of the newly established Crime Operations Assessment which is a weekly review of all criminal activity and quality of life issues by the Chief of Police, Division Commanders, Traffic Safety Personnel, Community Relations Officers, and Code Enforcement.

The new problem solving police strategy has also resulted in many changes to the Gloucester Township Police Department, including the restructuring of the police organization to include a Community and Personnel Services Division with a sub-unit dedicated solely to community relations efforts, implementation of a bike patrol unit, deployment of low speed electric vehicles (LSV) to community parks, creation of a full time Professional Standards Unit (Internal Affairs), deployment of the “Graffiti Camera” to assist in apprehending vandals, dedicating an officer solely to police intelligence gathering to assist in solving crime through information sharing and data collation, the deployment of seven new police officers, a work schedule modification, and the construction of a Police Operations Center that has become the nerve center utilized in developing the most efficient strategies necessary to combat crime and public nuisance issues.
Upon the completion of the news conference, media representatives will have an opportunity to see the new Police Operations Center, police bicycles and bicycle patrol officers, Community Relations Unit Van specifically equipped for special community events, and the recently acquired police low speed electric vehicle.
