Benicia Police Investigate Two Separate Shootings

Benicia Police are asking for the public's help in solving two separate shootings that occurred just four days apart. "These shootings are very unusual for our community and we need people to come forward to help us identify the suspects and, in one case, the victims," Benicia Police Lt. Mike Daley said.

The first incident happened around 8:10 pm on June 29th on the 400 block of East L Street. Benicia police were called to that location on a report of one male subject shooting at two other males. Upon investigating the incident, Benicia police located two spent casings but could not find the shooter or the two people he was seen shooting at.

"We had witnesses who verified that one white male subject shot at least twice at two black males subjects who were running away from him," Lt. Daley said. "No one we talked to could identify any of the three, so we're hoping that someone can call us and provide information."

Another witness said the two people who had been shot at ran across Military East and jumped into a late model black Nissan Sentra with a rear spoiler. The car was eventually seen getting onto eastbound 780 from East 5th Street. The shooter may have fled in a truck, but no further description was available. A check of all local hospitals did not find anyone with a gunshot wound.

The second shooting occurred outside the apartment complex on the 1500 block of East 4th Street around 11:35 pm on July 3rd. In that case, Benicia officers were called to the scene on reports that someone had fired rounds into an apartment.

Upon arrival, officers found a large party in and around one of the apartments in which almost all partygoers were intoxicated. Officers were able to check the apartment where the shots were reportedly aimed at and found no one injured.

"In this case, it appears as though an argument took place between one of the tenants in the apartment and someone who was asked to leave the party," Lt. Daley said. "Eventually, this person that was asked to leave came back with three or four other people and at some point he allegedly shot three or four rounds from the stairway area up towards the second floor apartment."

In this second case, Benicia police officers and detectives have interviewed many people and have developed a person of interest. "We're hopeful this shooting can be solved and that we'll arrest the responsible, but we do need others who may have information about this shooting to come forward," Daley said.

Anyone with information on these cases is asked to call Benicia Police Detective Kevin Rose at (707)746-4252 or CRIME STOPPERS at (707)644-STOP (7867). CRIME STOPPERS offers rewards for information in cases such as these.
