Route 6 Bridge returns to Two-Way Traffic Wednesday June 30, 2010. Still no left turns onto Del. Dr. Stay Alert!

Route 6 Bridge to return to Two-Way Traffic Wednesday

Motorists will need to stay alert for changes

Dunmore – PennDOT will reopen the Route 6 bridge over the Delaware River at Matamoras, Pa. and Port Jervis, NY, to two-way traffic by the end of the work day on Wednesday (6/30). The contractor will move the barrier to the upstream side of the bridge, then eradicate pavement markings and change signage. The detour utilizing I-84 to Exit 1 also will be removed.

While the bridge will be open to two-way traffic, motorists will need to be aware of the new temporary width restrictions. Each of the lanes will be 12 feet wide with an oversized load restriction to 11 feet because of the barrier. It is important to note that work on the two open lanes is not complete, yet has progressed enough to allow the contractor to set the deck in place. Because crews will continue to work around traffic, drivers need to be aware of construction vehicles and workers without being distracted by the work and must adhere to the 25 mph speed limit.

Motorists will not be able to turn left onto Delaware Drive as that roadway will only allow right turns from Delaware Dr. to Pennsylvania Ave. Current traffic pattern in that area remains the same. Left turns onto Water Street will not be allowed during this traffic phase.

In the upcoming months, another traffic switch will occur, splitting the traffic around either side of the center lane in order to complete the bridge painting.

This bridge project includes rehabilitation of the deck, beams, stringers and bearings; fabricated structural steel repairs; repair of expansion dams; pressure mortar surfacing plus painting for preservation. Funding is through the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. Anticipated completion is this Fall. Contractor is Minichi Construction.
