Possible Scam. Paving company quoting at greatly reduced rate. If suspect scam, call 911

The Minnehaha County Sheriff's Office would like to warn the public concerning the possibility of scams taking place in the area. The Sheriff's Office has received a couple of calls concerning paving companies taht are soliciting rural residents for asphalt paving work to be done. This is a common scenario that takes place throughtout the summer months. Please be cautious when dealing with companies taht are soliciting paving or other constructiion work. Many times when dealing with work of this type a job could be completed with less than satisfactory quality and the problems would not arise immediately. Once the substandard work is discovered the subjects that performed the work are unalbe to be located, leaving the resident with a job that needs to be redone and no way to recoup their intial monetary loss. Whenever a company is soliciting work in your area please be caution before entering into agreements with them. In mnay of these instances the price quoted is at a greatly reduced rate, if a company is quoting a price that seems to good to be true it probably is. If you choose to have a company perform work on your property in may be a good idea to check references in the area that have had the company perform work in the past, not just the recent past but a year or two prior. When making an agreement reagarding work to be done take the time to contact other contractors who may be able to provide an estimate or information on quality standards for the work to be done. Being diligent about verifying a contrator's work history or integrity before work is started will hopefully prevent an often expensive and difficult process for home owners.
