HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION UPDATE
SMPD Rolls out Anonymous Text / Email Tipline

San Mateo Police Detectives continue to work tirelessly in pursuit of leads and suspect information in their ongoing investigation into the death of David Lewis, a 54 year-old community leader in East Palo Alto. Lewis was gunned down in the west parking area of Hillsdale Mall on the afternoon of June 9th.

In order to encourage and increase investigative information in this case, SMPD has established a partnership with TipNow.org, a text-based two-way anonymous tip line that the public can access via text message and email.

Users of this service access TipNow via a phone number or email address as provided below, creating an anonymous message and encrypting the tipster’s source phone number or email. The anonymous tip goes directly to investigators, who can use the available technology to engage in a two-way encrypted and anonymous dialogue with the tipster.

For the purpose of the ongoing investigation into the murder of David Lewis, this allows investigators to gain quick access to information from witnesses and tipsters. It also allows investigators to ask follow-up questions of the tipsters, all without compromising their wish to remain anonymous.

SMPD has rolled out this service to maintain contact with members of the community who may be concerned by direct contact with the police due to fear of identification or other issues.

The San Mateo Police Department emphasizes to the public that this is not a substitute for emergency service. If you have an immediate need for the Police for any reason, please continue to contact us via 911.

Again, SMPD Detectives are continuing to relentlessly pursue leads in this case, and will continue to do so until this investigation is brought to resolution. SMPD needs the assistance of the community in helping us develop new leads and provide information helpful to this critical investigation. Anyone with information regarding the death of David Lewis is urged to contact SMPD:

• TipNow:
1. Text an anonymous message – 650.262.3473
