HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION

June 9, 2010 5:42pm –

SMPD Patrol Officers were dispatched to a reported shooting in the west parking lot of Hillsdale Mall. SMPD Detectives were also on duty and responded immediately to the scene. Officers arrived within two minutes and located a single victim suffering from what appeared to be a single gunshot wound. The suspect had already fled the scene. The victim, a 54 year-old Palo Alto resident, was immediately transported by ambulance to a local trauma center. He died at the hospital. The victim in this case appears to have been targeted, and this is not believed to be a random act.

Officers and Detectives immediately isolated and locked down a crime scene in the parking lot outside of Hillsdale Mall. Business continued as usual inside the mall, and was not disrupted by the investigation.

The San Mateo County Homicide protocol was initiated – this is the first Homicide of the year in the City of San Mateo. SMPD Detectives are continuing to work around the clock utilizing all available resources, and will pursue all avenues of investigation until those responsible are brought to justice.

Again, this was an isolated incident, and does not appear to have been a random act. The City of San Mateo remains a safe place to live, work, and shop.

** This investigation is ongoing and no other information specific to the investigation is currently being released. SMPD will provide further updated information as soon as it becomes available. **
