The following Press Release was provided by Joe Pasinato, USFS, Los Padres:

NATIONAL TRAILS DAY – SAN YSIDRO TRAIL – SATURDAY JUNE 5, 2010

Santa Barbara, CA - The Front Country Trails Multi-Jurisdictional Program will celebrate National Trails Day with a trail work project on the San Ysidro Trail on Saturday, June 5. The U.S. Forest Service, working with the City of Santa Barbara, County of Santa Barbara and volunteer groups, will meet at 8:45 am at Manning Park, School House Road entrance, and then carpool to the trailhead. Volunteers will return to the park around 2 pm for a picnic sponsored by the Santa Barbara Chicken Ranch. All experience levels are invited to participate.

Santa Barbara joins the American Hiking Society and outdoor enthusiasts across the country in celebrating the 18th annual National Trails Day, held each year on the first weekend in June. More than 1,500 events will take place around the country including trail maintenance, hiking, biking, horseback riding, bird watching, running and trail celebrations.

The theme of this year's National Trails Day is “Find Your Happy Place.”

“That happy place is close to home for the many hikers, bikers and equestrians who regularly enjoy the front country trails,” said Front Country Trails Coordinator Rebecca Mordini.

“The Forest Service has hosted a trail day the first week of June for the past 18 years,” according to Kerry Kellogg, Recreation, Wilderness and Trails Manager for the Los Padres National Forest. “The trails need work every year to repair water damage and cut back brush growing over the trail, and it wouldn't get done without the help of volunteers from the community.”
Feeding the trail volunteers falls to a local restaurant that has long supported trail work in the front country.

“The Santa Barbara Chicken Ranch has been a steady supporter of trail work for many years and is very generous in donating delicious chicken, steak, rice and beans for our hungry and hardworking volunteers,” says Chris Orr of Santa Barbara Mountain Bike Volunteers.

Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants to protect from poison oak, and to bring the usual hiking supplies such as water, sunscreen, hat, and a snack. Gloves and helmets are provided or you may bring your own; all tools are provided.

The Santa Barbara Front Country Trails are managed jointly by the City of Santa Barbara, the County of Santa Barbara and the U.S. Forest Service with community input through a Multi-jurisdictional Task Force.
