Lawtey Police Officer Arrested

On Thursday May 27, 2010 Detectives with the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office arrested a former officer with the Lawtey Police Department. The arrest involves three victims at this time, but others may come forward.

The charges are linked to the officer stopping traffic violators and offering them the option of paying their fines immediately, in cash, to prevent any points from being applied to their driver’s license.

On May 5, 2010 the indiscretions came to light when a concerned citizen called the Bradford County Communications Center to ascertain if this was proper protocol. Deputy Kelli McMahan realized the severity of the complaint and referred the case to a supervisor. Contact was then made with the command staff at the Lawtey Police Department. Captain Shane Bennett responded to the scene and immediately suspended the officer pending an investigation. Police Chief Butch Jordan requested the investigation be handled by the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office to insure it was conducted in a fair and impartial manner.

Detective Lieutenant Gail Russell was assigned the investigation and has thus far identified two additional victims of similar actions by the officer. After interviewing the officer on today’s date, Lt. Russell arrested and transported him to the Bradford County Jail without incident. He will be held in protective custody until first appearance on Friday morning.

Upon hearing of the arrest, Chief Jordan stated: “We are extremely disappointed that one of our Police Officers, who was sworn to serve and protect the citizens of our city and state, instead chose to abuse the powers of his position. Mr. Sheffield was vested with a great amount of authority and even a greater amount of trust. He violated both and now must answer to our justice system.”
